In the post-rock explosion of the
mid-nineties, Ativin had a unique
concept. Whereas Dianogah focused on
two bassists sans guitar, Ativin
followed the two guitarists sans bass route. Calling Bloomington, Indiana
their home, the primarily instrumental trio made their debut with the 1996
Albini/Saff engineered Pills Versus Planes EP. Influenced by Slint, Rodan, A Minor Forest, and Gastr Del Sol, the band adeptly merged their contemporary
influences with their affinity for the classical compositions of Stravinsky,
Orff, and Schoenberg.
Instantly powerful and abrasive, the opening track is one
of the few Ativin compositions to
feature vocals. Whereas the band would evolve to a more compositional route, Pills
Versus Planes, lays the textbook blueprint of loud and soft dynamics that
the band will always be known for. Interestingly enough, it was Braid that first brought the band to
the attention of Polyvinyl Records after a series of shows together in the Midwest.
Shortly after the release of their debut album, 1998's German
Water, the band parted ways, releasing the posthumous Summing the
Approach EP in 1999. Guitarist
Daniel Burton and drummer Rory Leitch went on to form Early Day Miners, a self-described "musical cooperative"
in which the core members were supported by a revolving cast of friends. Ativin reformed in 2002, releasing the Interiors
full-length.
