Well, it's been a month since our last "Who I Hang With" segment with Tim Kinsella. Time for a new entry! This month we learn about Disappears, the second band to be featured on Joan of Arc Presents: Don't Mind Control. Enjoy!
Disappears tap directly into both of the two responses I am consciously aware of having every time I've been moved by anything - music, film, art, whatever. Sometimes I think "what gives you the right" when experiencing something particularly daring, whether Merzbow or Richard Youngs. And sometimes I think, "oh yeah, right, simplicity, I could've done that if I wasn't so stupid." Disappears are daringly simple. And that's what makes it expressive. A lot of bands, and I'm as guilty as anyone, occasionally fall into expressing little more than their manual dexterity. But no one cares. Disappears blend tribal psychedelia and punk in perfect measures. Younger, less sophisticated players could never pull it off. They play heavy music and confront the throb and gravity with cool equipoise. I may be kinda a clutz in public, but in private I am cool and these are my friends. Hide More
