Palehound announces new album, Black Friday, out June 7. Watch the video for lead single "Aaron" now via The FADER
Oh how we've been waiting for this day! Overjoyed, elated, smiling-thru-tears excited to share more new music with you from the almighty Palehound, this time with an album announcement to boot! Black Friday arrives June 7th.
The third full-length from the Boston-based trio is a finespun exploration of all the forms that love can take: love between friends, love for people no longer in your life, love in the face of self-hate, love that endures through major life changes or through many tiny catastrophes. Palehound singer/songwriter Ellen Kempner imbues her thoughtful narrative voice on the much-anticipated album, announced today via The FADER.
Alongside the announcement, Palehound has shared the video for "Aaron," a song Kempner wrote for her partner in the midst of his transitioning process –
"Aaron is a character that represents my partner, who is trans. It’s not specific to his experience though, the song is about change in relation to our bodies in general,” she says. “It’s about learning to be comfortable in our skins, whether that means changing our bodies or mindsets. Robert Kolodny directed the video and captured this theme perfectly through portraying physical insecurity as living in an unruly, amorphous body and gradually shedding it.”
The official music video was created by House of Nod and directed by Robert Kolodny. It features stunning masks crafted by Gaudmother, whose work also appears on the album cover and the single art for the recently released stand-alone single "Killer".
With her hushed yet urgent vocals, Kempner harnesses her ability to draw so much power from a single word, turning "Aaron" into an indelibly tender expression of devotion and love –
Palehound examine the intricacies of friendship and partnership all throughout Black Friday, handling the subject with a level of attention rarely found in pop songs. Co-produced by Kempner and Gabe Wax (Beirut, Soccer Mommy), she and her bandmates Jesse Weiss (drums) and Larz Brogan (bass) recorded at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, California, tracking most of the songs live and breathing a new vitality into the band's elegantly detailed sound.
Pre-order your copy from now from the Polyvinyl store on limited edition 180-Gram Light Blue w/ Light Yellow and Orange Splatter or 180-Gram Black Cherry. Plus the merch offering of a lifetime: Gaudmother designed t-shirt, Faye Orlove bandana, a keychain, and a painfully sweet embroidery kit.
