Don't call it a comeback. Kansas City indie rock band, Shy Boys, have shared their first new recording in five years, ahead of two shows next week alongside Polyvinyl label mates, Anamanaguchi.
The energetic new single, "Upperclassmen," is a freewheeling anthem for the underdog that rides high upon bright jangle-pop verses, and charming vocal harmonies led by the commanding falsetto of singer / guitarist Collin Rausch.
Capturing the band's ever so gentle punk proclivities, "Underclassmen" is charged with nimble guitars that evoke the early 80s spirit of South Bay SST bands like Minutemen and Descendents. Meanwhile, Kansas City artist Diyana Shipp's beautifully detailed cover illustration of two leaping 'letter-jacket jocks' (who will undoubtedly "kick your ass") calls to mind the iconic pen and ink contrast work of Raymond Pettibon. Saved by the bell, yet again, "Upperclassmen" gets in and out quicker than you can make it to homeroom.
Speaking to the band's current status, Shy Boys shared the following statement:
Since Talk Loud came out in 2020, outside of a couple post-pandemic tours with Mild High Club and Video Age, the boys and I have mostly been nesting quietly in Kansas City. Shy Boys eventually evolved into more of a Tuesday night ritual like your uncle's cover band with his work buddies. Always working on new material, but doing it for the hang. Then out of nowhere Anamanaguchi reached out about maybe hitting the road again for a couple shows to promote a record that they were releasing after some time off and I was like, "What's stopping us from sharing something new too?" After all these years in a basement it's exciting and terrifying to crawl back out and reintroduce ourselves with "Upperclassmen."
Shy Boys will hit the road next week for a weekend warrior run with fellow Polyvinyl label mates, Anamanaguchi, who are currently touring in support of their lyrically-driven debut and new album, Anyway.
