American Football's first (and only) album showcases cleanly picked guitars, intricate drumming, and the vocals of Mike Kinsella (Owen, Joan of Arc). The band, made up of Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos rooted itself in Champaign and recorded this album at Private Studios with Brendan Gamble (Braid).
Despite little touring and with only an EP behind them, these nine songs highlight the trio's uncanny songwriting abilities. The album's photos and layout mark the first Polyvinyl design done by Chris Strong.
After receiving hundreds of requests, Polyvinyl finally pressed the American Football album on vinyl in 2004.
The guitar work on this disc is both intelligent and precise...the drumming is remarkably inventive...forming a varied rhythmic backbone for the ethereal vocals of singer Mike Kinsella.
With Mike Kinsella on board you know the song writing is top notch and each song more graceful than the next.Heckler
All Music Guide
Kinsella's main strength seems to be in drifting, floating waves of melody, and American Football makes good on this in a pretty impressive way.
Delusions of Adequacy
This is an album's worth of beautiful rock.
These nine songs weave together almost seamlessly and create a beautiful flow and environment.
